Reduces Anxiety and Fear
Sedation can help children who feel nervous or scared at the dentist feel calm and secure during treatment. By easing anxiety, we’re able to create a more positive experience and help prevent long-term dental fear.

Sedation dentistry helps children receive the dental care they need in a calm and comfortable way. At Steiner Ranch Pediatric Dentistry, we offer carefully selected sedation options to support children who feel anxious, have special healthcare needs, or require more extensive treatment.

Sedation dentistry is a safe and effective way to help children feel calm and comfortable during dental treatment, especially if they experience anxiety, have difficulty sitting still, have special health care needs, or require longer or more involved procedures. At Steiner Ranch Pediatric Dentistry, we offer multiple levels of sedation, from laughing gas to general anesthesia, all carefully selected and monitored by our trained team. Every sedation plan is personalized to your child’s age, health history, and treatment needs, and we take the time to walk parents through what to expect so you can feel confident in your child’s care.
Sedation dentistry can be a helpful option for children who feel anxious, fearful, or have difficulty sitting comfortably during dental treatment. At Steiner Ranch Pediatric Dentistry, sedation is never one-size-fits-all. We offer multiple levels of sedation and always begin with a thoughtful conversation about your child’s needs, comfort level, and treatment options, including alternatives that may not require sedation at all. Your child’s safety and well-being are our top priorities, and every recommendation is made with care and transparency.

For children who are afraid of needles or have a strong gag reflex, sedation can make treatment more manageable and comfortable. This allows necessary care to be completed without added stress or discomfort.
Sedation helps children remain relaxed and still during treatment, even for longer or more complex appointments. When children are comfortable, parents can feel more at ease knowing their child is receiving care in a safe, supportive environment.
Our team takes a thoughtful, safety-first approach to sedation dentistry. We carefully evaluate each child and explain all options so parents feel confident and informed before treatment begins.
Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a mild form of sedation that helps children feel relaxed while remaining awake and responsive. Your child will wear a small nose mask and breathe in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen, which can create a light, “floaty” feeling and help reduce anxiety, fear, and discomfort during treatment. It may also help children with a strong gag reflex feel more comfortable. The effects wear off quickly, and your child will receive pure oxygen at the end of the visit so they can return to normal activities shortly after their appointment
Oral conscious sedation involves medication taken before the appointment to help children feel deeply relaxed. This option is often recommended for longer or more involved procedures or for children who experience significant dental anxiety. Once the medication takes effect, your child may feel sleepy or groggy and may fall asleep during treatment, though they can still be awakened and respond to commands. It’s normal for children to remember little or none of the appointment afterward. Specific instructions, including fasting requirements and post-appointment care, will be reviewed with parents in advance to ensure safety and comfort.
For certain cases, such as very young children, extensive dental needs, or complex treatment plans, general anesthesia may be the safest and most effective option. When provided in-office, this allows all necessary care to be completed in a single visit while your child is fully asleep and unaware of the procedure. General anesthesia is administered under strict safety protocols, with your child closely monitored throughout treatment to ensure a smooth, comfortable experience.
Some children with complex medical conditions or special health care needs may require dental treatment to be completed in a hospital setting. In these cases, care is provided under general anesthesia with the support of a hospital-based medical team to ensure the highest level of safety. This option allows children who need additional medical monitoring to receive comprehensive dental care in an environment best suited to their individual health needs.

We begin with a thorough review of your child’s medical history, dental needs, and previous experiences. This helps us determine whether sedation is appropriate and which option is best.
If sedation is recommended, we create a customized plan tailored to your child’s needs. Parents receive clear instructions and have the opportunity to ask questions before treatment day.
During treatment, your child is closely monitored by trained professionals. After care is complete, we provide detailed post-treatment guidance and follow-up support.

When administered by trained pediatric dental professionals, dental sedation is considered safe for children. At Steiner Ranch Pediatric Dentistry, we follow strict safety protocols and carefully monitor each child throughout their procedure to ensure their comfort and well-being.
As with any medical treatment, sedation does carry some risks, which can include drowsiness, nausea, or, in rare cases, an adverse reaction to medication. Certain medical conditions may also affect which type of sedation is appropriate. Before recommending sedation, we conduct a thorough review of your child’s medical history and discuss all options, risks, and benefits with you so you can make a confident, informed decision about your child’s care.
The length of sedation depends on the type used and how your child responds to it. With nitrous oxide (laughing gas), the effects begin to wear off almost immediately once the gas is stopped, and most children are fully alert within minutes after their appointment. Oral conscious sedation may last for several hours, and children may feel drowsy and need to rest for the remainder of the day. For deeper sedation or general anesthesia, effects can last longer, and children will need to be closely monitored during recovery. Every child responds differently, and our team will provide detailed post-sedation instructions based on your child’s specific needs.
Sedation is not always necessary, and we carefully evaluate each child to determine the best approach. While many children do well with gentle, minimally invasive care alone, sedation can be helpful for those who experience significant anxiety, have difficulty sitting comfortably for treatment, have a strong gag reflex, or need more involved dental care. Our team considers your child’s comfort level, overall health, and the complexity of the procedure before making any recommendations. Our goal is always to provide safe, effective care in the most calm and supportive environment possible.
